Safety Education

Thank you for giving KCSAR the opportunity to help you learn about back country saftey.  While traveling in the back country, whether for hunting, backpacking or hiking, you should carry the following gear with you...
GEAR TO FIND YOUR WAY

Map of the area in which you are traveling
   Compass
Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
   Extra food
   Extra water
   Extra clothing
Emergency shelter - large garbage bags
Fire starter kit - Strike anywhere matches in a waterproof container, flint and steel,
lighter and some type of tinder.
   Pocket knife
   First aid kit
Signaling device - mirrior and whistle
   10ft of 550 cord

TELL SOMEONE YOUR PLANS
Let someone responsible know the route you are taking, and your expected time of return. If you later decide to move from one area to another, advise that person and before you leave check the weather forecast.

The most important essential , however, is not on the list--"Common Sense". Having the right gear is one thing, knowing how and when to use it is quite another. Most often, it's not a person's equipment that saves their bacon. It's their experience, know-how, and good judgment. Conversely, it is generally inexperience and lack of good judgment that gets people into trouble.  Be familiar with your equipment and know how to use it.
